Intersil's new product is two new 55V two-phase synchronous boost controllers with integrated high-side and low-side MOSFET drivers. The company said that the ISL78227 and ISL78229 are the industry's most powerful, highly integrated boost controllers that can be used to simplify the design of high-power automotive applications. These devices are powered by 12V battery power and can boost the output voltage to 24V, 36V or 48V to achieve 200W to 800W advanced trunk audio amplifiers, start-stop systems and headlight LED string lights. Both controllers also meet the stringent requirements of industrial and telecommunications applications where boost DC / DC converters must provide high power in a small solution size. ISL78227 and ISL78229 implement a modular design for systems that require power and thermal expansion capabilities. They support a wide input and output range from 5V to 55V and provide greater than 95% efficiency to reduce power consumption and heat dissipation. The ability to stagger two controllers for a four-phase application effectively doubles the output power and reduces input / output ripple, allowing power supply designers to use smaller capacitors to save board space and reduce bill of materials costs. Multiple protection functions allow the ISL78227 and ISL78229 to operate under almost any conditions. Their unique soft-start feature ensures a smooth transition from discontinuous mode (DCM) to continuous conductive mode (CCM) after completing soft-start, thereby ensuring power supply safety under all starting conditions. The ISL78227 and ISL78229 also provide unique envelope tracking capabilities that can dynamically adjust or scale the output voltage dynamically to meet the needs of all system loads. For example, whenever the battery is low, the power consumption of various components, such as audio amplifiers, must be limited, especially if the radio is turned on with the engine off. Transient events (for example, a start-stop system restarting the engine) also require voltage adjustments in real time. To simplify the task of obtaining ISO 26262 Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL), ISL78229 provides a digital PMBus (TM) interface for advanced control, telemetry and diagnostics. On-chip PMBus interface eliminates the need to configure the dedicated telemetry circuits required for fault type, system recovery and monitoring. "Philips Chesley, senior vice president of Intersil Precision Products, said," ISL78227 and ISL78229 enable high-power boost applications on a smaller solution scale, providing high efficiency and providing multiple layers of power protection. "The unique combination of innovative features, integrated tracking and PMBus options provides customers with a robust and easy-to-use solution for their high-voltage designs. " ISL78227 and ISL78229 can be used in combination with ISL78206 40V / 2.5A synchronous buck controller, ISL78310 1A LDO and ISL78233 3A synchronous buck regulator to provide a complete power solution for automotive audio amplifier power supplies.
